A scientist by training, Dr. John Rumble has combined his analytical and scientific skills with years of executive experience in a variety of industry, government, and non-profit organizations. Rumble is a pioneer in using computers and information technology in all aspects of scientific and technical (S&T) data. Working for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), he expanded its Standard Reference Data Program into new scientific areas, such as materials, engineering and software. He helped design and produce some of the first PC databases as well as major online scientific data networks and has written extensively on using data science to manage and exploit all types of scientific and technical data.

Since 2011, he has operated his own company – R&R Data Services -­ providing a wide range of information management services to industry, national and international government agencies, and universities. Recently, he has become a certified leadership coach (see www.jrrcoachng,com). He has also led several national and international non-profit organizations and scientific societies in positions of leadership.

Dr. Rumble received a B.A. in Chemistry from Cornell University, a M.A. in Chemistry from the City University of New York, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from Indiana University, Bloomington. Dr. Rumble is Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) and was Chair of the Forum on Industrial and Applied Physics (FIAP) (2013). He organized the APS-FIAP Workshop on National Issues in Industrial Physics (2014) and is active in educating young physicists about careers in industry. Presently, Rumble recently completed his term as a member of the APS Board of Directors, Chair of the APS Council of Representatives. He was the lead editor of the economic study The Impact of Industrial Physics on the U.S. Economy, sponsored by APS and the American Institute of Physics.

Rumble is also a Fellow of IUPAC, AAAS, ASTM International, ASM International, and IAFoST, as well as a Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Metrology. He was President (1998-2002) of CODATA. He was awarded the CODATA 2006 Prize and served as Editor of the CODATA Data Science Journal. He recently completed a term as Chair of Identity, a Montgomery County (MD) organization dedicated to helping Latino youths. Dr. Rumble has authored several books, written over 70 technical papers, and given more than 150 talks on five continents.
